Research Statement

My current creative and research practice is focused on creating structures for improvised musical performance through variable form pieces. Recent work has explored formal control by members of the ensemble, computer processes, and interaction between the performer(s) and the computer. These works allow for closer examination of the social hierarchies created in improvised musical settings. I am currently working on interactive musical computer agents and my plans include exploration of the relationships between performers and processes in the presence of an interactive computer agent.

Anthropofactual for Trombone and Computer

Anthropofactual for Trombone and Computer was commissioned by Matthew Wright. It deals with the presence or absence of facts, and how one might question reality. The video is from my performance of the piece at ESS in Chicago.

Contemplation on A City That You Love So Much

"Contemplation..." is a composition for "Songs of Home Songs of Change" which is a sound art installation consisting of a sonified map of New Orleans, brass instruments , and field recordings by New Orleans high school students.

Program Notes for “Contemplation on A City That You Love So Much”

When I was invited to compose for “Songs of Home Songs of Change,” I had a chance to see it in installation mode. Even though the piece is about the ideas of home and change, seeing the map of New Orleans in this form and thinking about change immediately brought my mind to New Orleans since August 2005. Painful destruction can lead to positive change, and I tend to be an optimist, so this piece trends towards optimism. These sounds are meant to provide a sonic basis for contemplation, not necessarily to guide the listener to a particular conclusion or thought. Allow these sounds to encourage your contemplation of a place you love.

Concrete Uncertainties

“Concrete Uncertainties” is a piece for improvisers in which the video is both part of the artistic presentation and the score for the performers. Kim Alpert is the collaborating video artist.

Performance by Versipel Collective from Southern Sonic 2018 at the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans.

5 minute video from Moxsonic 2024

MOXSonic is a great annual experimental music conference held at the University of Central Missouri. On of the many great features of this gathering is a session made up of 5 minute video presentations. Each presenter makes a video that is no longer than 5 minutes. The participants gather and watch the videos, then have Q&A with the presenter after the video viewing.
